THE OCCUPATION
In June 1967 Israel invaded and occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.
The UN Security Council unanimously ordered them to leave but Israel arrogantly refused to comply. Israel went on to repeatedly violate the Geneva Conventions, crucial international laws created because of the horrible experience of World War 2 Nazi occupations. Israel took Palestinian lands, displaced Palestinians, and built huge Jewish-only colonies. Israel drained the water resources and created segregated roads for Jews-only.
Now Israel is building a massive wall on Palestinian land, one that dwarfs the Berlin Wall, to isolate Palestinians inside unsustainable ghettos. The World Court has declared this wall illegal and ordered it be torn down. But Israel arrogantly continues to defy international law and world opinion.
THE SIEGE
In January 2006 the Palestinians had a genuinely democratic election, as certified by the Carter Centre observer teams, headed by President Jimmy Carter.
But Israel didnt like the result and imposed a financial and military siege on the occupied territories. Israel called on every country to cut-off even humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Israel is trying to blackmail Palestinians into abandoning the government they had freely and peacefully elected.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was the first government leader in the world to praise the Israelis for their siege and to do their bidding to impose an international financial blockade of the Palestinian government.
A recent Oxfam report describes the results of the siege: Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip are suffering devastating humanitarian consequences as incomes plummet, debts mount and essential services face meltdown. Oxfam found that 46% of Palestinians now do not have enough food to meet their needs; that the number of people in deep poverty (defined as living on less than 50 cents a day) nearly doubled in 2006 to over one million people most of them women and children.
The Oxfam report calls for an immediate end to the international financial blockade of the Hamas-led Palestinian government.
